Streamside Report
Brule River
Douglas
11/4/98
Weather: cloudy, 40*F-50*F
Water: clear/low
Hatches: none
Time: AM (10/29 - 10/31)
Comments: The river was lower than normal for this time of year, so it
made fishing a bit challanging due to the fact that fish could see you. A
low profile combined with camoflage clothing and an upstream approach seemed
to help a little, but fish were quite spooky. We did however, manage to
land and release a few nice steelhead in the 23" to 31" range over the three
days. Yarn flies in orange and peach seemed to attract the most attention.
We also caught some nice browns in the 22" to 24" range using the same
patterns.
Although we were practicing catch and release, many anglers seem to be
unaware of the 26", one steelhead per day regulation, as the owner of the
Brule Motel abserved anglers taking undersized fish and more than their
limit. It is too bad that not everyone shows the same respect and
stewardship for our limited resources. The Brule River is a wondrefully
wild and prestine place to enjoy and I hope that it will remain this way for
generations to come. The only way we can assure that this will be, is to
carfully tread on this fragile resource and leave no trace of our passage
there.
