Comments: Made the long trek to Brule for some "wild" steelhead action. Didn't turn a fish in about 4 hours Saturday night. Caught one 3 lb buck, lost about a 5 lb, and turned one other on Sunday. Talked to a "local" who caught 4 fish before I got to the river. All fish were dark. None of the locals I talked to have heard of any fresh fish in the river. A huge (20 ft tall!!) ice jam is blocking the south shore of the lake and the mouth of the river. Not only does the ice physically block the fish, it keeps the water colder turning off the fish too.
There were dark fish on redds above Hwy 2, safe from the fishermen. They could easily be seen from several bridges. Good to see the natural reproduction taking place without the fish getting hassled.
Also drove to the Sioux River which is a smallish creek that empties into Chequamegon Bay. Observed lots of fish migrating past the "Big Rock" in the fish refuge. The water was very muddy and the few fisherman fishing below the refuge were having no luck.
The best fishing on the Superior Tribs is yet to come!
