Got out in the late afternoon and saw a lot of activity. After a while we realized it was all sturgeon everywhere, had one 30+ inch pike on a bardo minnow, other than that nothing. Smallmouth still have not moved in heavy.

Not much happening on nymphs from 6 o'clock on. Switched to a small Adams around 6:45 and got 3 strikes and my first rainbow of the year, a bright 11 incher. Have been trying a variety of patterns for the 20+ inchers, such as leaches, crawfish, frogs, anything big and ugly...wondering if anyone has had any success pulling anything bigger than 11 inches out of Spring Creek north of the "Lodi Fart" (water treatment plant). Last - would love to organize a group to tie flies &/or provide classes in Lodi!

Caught several trout, and upon comming to a new hole that I had not known about I spotted what looked like a 20-30 lb trout swimming away I of course watched from a bluff 10-13 feet above the water. My god it was so breath taking it looked like the size of the king salmon you see caught in Alaska. Oh and I used the beadhead hott pink squirl sold at lunds hardware for $2.00.

I fished the Onion on Saturday morning for about 4 hours. I started with a couple of nymphs: #10 Green Weenie and #14 BH Pheasant Tail. I caught about 15 trout in total. A couple of rainbows and the rest were browns. The biggest was probably 13-14". About 1/3 took the Green Weenie and reast came on the Pheasant Tail. Just before quitting I put on a dry fly and managed one small brown on a #14 Asusable Wulff. I saw a few mayflies hatching, but not very many and nothing much was rising.

The river waa high and off color when I arrived. I wasn't optimistic, but rigged up and gave it a shot anyway. There were a few fish rising in the first pool so I tied on a dry fly. In next few minutes I caught trout on a #14 Patriot and missed a couple of other strikes. I continued working upstream with the dry, but didn't have much luck for next half hour or so. Then I rounded a bend and saw another angler. I guess I hsd been fishing behind him and that was the reason I had not had any action after the fist pool.
After chatting with the other angler for a few minutes I switched over to a couple of nymphs with an indicator. In the next 2-3 hours I proceeded to catch about a dozen trout including a couple that were in the 14-15" range. Beadhead Hare' Ears and Beachead Pheasant Tails were the ticket. I ended up catching 3 Rainbows and the rest were Browns. All in all a good morning of fishing.

In about 2 hours I caught about 10 trout, all browns. The two biggest were in the 10-12" range. There were a few mayflies in the air and some sporadic rises, but not much of a hatch. All the fish took a #14 Ausable Wulff dry fly.

Despite it being breezy and the water a little high it was a great day to be on the water. When I arrived to the stream there was no surface activity, but I tied on a #16 deer-hair caddis anyway and it produced a few brookies within the 15 minutes of fishing. The Hendricksons began appearing about 1:30 and brought the brookies to the surface for an hour and a half. A #14 grey-bodied Comparadun did the trick.

Openning day on the onion was splendid! agreeable weather in the low to mid fifties. The warmer air temps (finally!) got some bugs moving: tons of midges in the air, mostly greyish in color, and a VERY sparse Hendrickson hatch. water temps seemed a bit cool, but with the spring we've had thats no surprise. Stream level was solid, not too high not too low, and the water was clear. Great day!

Caddis! |

Arrived previous afternoon on Big Green. Weather was overcast and a chilling 40 degrees. Expected to find Green chocolate with run-off from rains, but surprised to see it clear. Fished special reg section. No surface action. Wind was screaming upstream probably 'cause I wanted to fish downstream. Had to break out 5wt to blast into wind. Lot's of success on streamer with PT dropper from 3pm to 8pm.
Friday— total contrast. Wind reduced and came around 180. Clear and 65 degrees by noon. Morning: moderate luck with same streamer/dropper rig (still no surface activity). Around noon, dropped off to almost nothing. Like the other folks on the Green that day we were hoping for caddis. Got our wish. On Schoolhouse section—Caddis not heavy, but enough to bring the fish up. Great fun with tan Elk Hair with emerger (pupae) dropper. Mostly dead drift shifting to tight line swing, then hanging in current with twitches. Mid afternoon seemed to favor the adult, and late afternoon was 90% emerger. Hits on every other cast. Had a blast. Sunburned my ears.

Lots of midges popping with the occasional stone, and i swear a saw a couple caddis Nothing major in the way of hatches. Water temps were darn cold, id estimate (no thermometer) low to mid 40's. Water was high, slightly off color, and fast, be careful when wading.

Caught a couple of rainbows in the morning, but also caught a nice smallmouth. Changed tactics and started catching smallies, (nothing too large), all the way to the state park. By the falls area at WRSP, I noticed a lot of minnows in the first big pool...probably a good time of the year for rapalas.
I am surprised by the diversity in the Willow- I've fly-fished awhile, but haven't caught the "Grand Slam" (brook, rainbow, brown, smallmouth) anywhere else.

Specific Location: Yankee Rapids near Prairie Road
Just moved into this area and am not familiar with the whole river. My wife and I fished on the section of the Yankee Rapids using the nymph and the wulf dry fly size 10-12. Awesome action in the first hour. My wife caught 11 browns on a nymph. Average length 11-12 inches. Myself had 7 nice sized fish (4 browns and 3 brookies). Brookies had a size of 8-9 inches, one nice sized brown: 14 inches!! We moved further south of the river and spotted some lies. This time it appeared only the nymphs were succesful on the brookies. No browns spotted. Overall...a succesfull day with some good and nice action!
Will absolutely fish more on this beautifull river!!

I'm noticing that too. The water felt WAY too warm for the middle of June. I'm also starting to see more and more pods of large pike (4-5 fish, 12-26") throughout the river. I'm concerned they are taking over the river. 2 trips this year (opening day & today), didn't even SEE a trout, let alone net one.

Got on river late, but still surprised at 5 fish in 4 hours. Hot day - record high set. Fished all nymphs on lower stretches. Pulled out one nice brown at 16 inches and the rest where all 12 inches or less. One white fish and one sucker also grabed the nymphs as well. mostly used small princes and some flashbacks worked well. Released all fish and can't wait to get back on the stream.

Fishing below the waterfall with the footbridge high above it. Using mostly #12-#16 beadhead prince nymphs my brother and I caught 8 brookies and browns between us. The lighter the tippet the better, we are finding with these fish.

Fished for 90 minutes with my dad and brother. None of us caught a thing--except for creek chubs, which were everywhere. We were using everything from wooly buggers to various dry flies.
We did however, see an angler using a small rooster tail and a spinning rod. He boasted of great success using such methods.

Very fast water. Caught a 12" brown by dropping a ladybug imitation in a quiet pool next to shore.

Just below the waterfall that has the footbridge high above it. Accessed by the tennis courts off of 29/35. Caught two browns one was 12" and two brookies less than 10". Caught them on beadhead prince nymphs, beadhead pheasant tails, and pink squirrels.

Went out yesterday evening and had great luck. I started out casting a size 14 caddis with a size 18 bead head nymph about a foot down. Caught fish on both. Then around 7pm switched to a size 18 dun and caught around 20 browns ranging from 10-17inches in 2 hours. Only my second time out this year. Still trying to get my cast back.
